For homeschool, these are a few ideas that I put together in order to introduce the concept of language in its widest possible sense.  I wanted my kids to learn these ideas before we began reviewing the parts of speech.


A symbol is something that represents something else.

Symbols are usually composed of sounds, images, gestures or facial expressions.

A language is a set of symbols and the rules for expressing those symbols.

A vocabulary is the set of symbols of a language.

Grammar is the set of rules for expressing the vocabulary of a language.

A word is an individual symbol within a language.

An alphabet is a set of symbols representing sounds in a spoken language.

A letter is a member of an alphabet.
